Course Description
“What are you noticing now?” is often a difficult question for clients to answer during EMDR reprocessing and an easy question for therapists to neglect in phases one and two of EMDR. This workshop will explore ways of enhancing all eight phases of EMDR using an approach to therapy called Constructed Awareness.
According to Constructed Awareness, our conscious experience is made of three building blocks—thoughts, sensations, and external stimuli—and most people are naturally more oriented to one of these building blocks. Some people are mentally oriented, spending more time in their minds. Some are sensation oriented, focusing more on sensations in their bodies. And others are externally oriented, focusing more on what’s happening in their external environment.
Such a limited perspective often restricts the client’s ability to connect with their full experience and report what they are noticing during EMDR reprocessing. Participants will learn the Constructed Awareness typology and resources to help clients respond more confidently when asked what they are noticing now, as well as how to nonviolently bring awareness to the client’s experience in a way that fosters a more gentle and effortless style of reprocessing.
In this two-day, EMDRIA-approved training, participants will learn:
To differentiate between the three building blocks of consciousness according to Constructed Awareness—thoughts, sensations, and external stimuli—to enhance working in all phases of EMDR
The Constructed Awareness typology to improve history taking in phase one of EMDR
Nonviolent awareness-focused resources that improve preparation in phase two of EMDR and help clients respond confidently when asked what they are noticing during EMDR processing
How to utilize the Constructed Awareness Questionnaire (CAQ) and the Emotion Tracker Handout to deepen history taking and personal awareness in phases one and two of EMDR
Constructed Awareness methods to improve cognitive interweaves during the processing phases of EMDR
How direct awareness of the client’s own experience changes their experience, and how this can be applied to all phases of EMDR
This webinar takes place completely online and consists of lecture, live and/or video demonstrations, and group discussion.
This is an intermediate-level training. To attend, you must be a licensed mental health therapist (psychologists, psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, social workers, MFTs, or mental health counselors pursuing a license or a practicum-level graduate student). If you are uncertain whether you meet these requirements, please contact info@constructedawareness.com. You do not have to be EMDR trained to attend.
