Advanced Trauma Processing in Practice

The Constructed Awareness Level 3: Advanced Trauma Processing in Practice training is a comprehensive, four-day workshop designed to equip mental health professionals with advanced trauma therapy techniques using the Constructed Awareness (CA) model. This advanced training builds upon knowledge from Levels One and Two, guiding therapists on integrating CA resources and interventions into a cohesive and fluid style of therapy where trauma processing arises naturally within therapy sessions.

This course is ideal for experienced mental health professionals who want to deepen their skills in trauma therapy, apply CA principles in complex cases, and master approaches for integrating trauma processing into their practice. Through a mix of lectures, live and video demonstrations, and hands-on practicum sessions, participants refine their therapeutic approach, fully integrating CA into their work for a comprehensive, client-centered trauma therapy model.

Prerequisite: Completion of Constructed Awareness Levels One and Two is required to attend this training.

In this training, you will learn:

  • Responsive Trauma Processing: Engage in methods that support the natural emergence of trauma responses during therapy, with active attunement to clients' trauma responses while maintaining flexibility and presence.

  • Advanced Trauma Processing: Deepen your understanding of single-event trauma, developmental trauma, and complex trauma, and learn to differentiate between them in clinical practice.

  • Orientation and Trauma: Discover how client orientation—mental, sensation, and external—affects trauma processing, and understand how clients with fixed or fragmented orientations may respond in therapy.

  • Nervous System Dynamics: Gain insights into integrating polyvagal theory to work with sympathetic and parasympathetic responses and trauma-related reactions, including fight, flight, freeze, and dissociation.

  • Practical Application: Through demonstrations and practicum sessions, participants apply CA theory, resources, and trauma processing techniques to real-world cases, integrating them into a cohesive therapeutic approach.

Target Audience and Course Content Level

This training is considered an advanced-level event. Constructed Awareness Levels One and Two are prerequisites. Licensed mental health therapists (e.g., psychologists, social workers, MFTs, or counselors) and graduate students in practicum are eligible to attend. Upcoming Trainings

Learning Objectives

At the completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the three building blocks of the client’s conscious experience—thought, sensation, and external senses.

  • List the six orientation styles of the CA typology.

  • Explain a single-event trauma.

  • Describe developmental trauma.

  • Explain complex trauma.

  • Demonstrate two ways to use objects in the external environment to assist in regulating the client during processing.

  • Explain tuning to process trauma in session.

  • Identify two ways to initiate spontaneous trauma processing during sessions.

  • Recite two ways mentally-oriented clients may respond during processing.

  • Assess two ways sensation-oriented clients may respond during processing.

  • Assess two ways externally-oriented clients may respond during processing.

  • Assess two ways clients with fixed orientations may respond to trauma processing.

  • Analyze two ways clients with fragmented orientations may respond during trauma processing.

  • Describe the principles of polyvagal theory and its application in understanding client responses during trauma processing.

  • Compare sympathetic and parasympathetic responses during trauma processing.

  • Recite two ways to tell if clients are transitioning from sympathetic to parasympathetic responses during trauma processing.

  • Identify two signs of a client exhibiting a fight response during trauma processing.

  • Identify two behaviors that indicate a flight response in clients during trauma processing.

  • List two signs of a freeze response during trauma processing.

  • Describe two signs of dissociation during trauma processing.
